1987: 21-4

"So what are they going to do for an encore?" was a subtitle in a newspaper article in the spring of 1987.  It was a fair question.  The Panthers had just accomplished the ultimate goal by becoming state champions the year before, and had graduated six starters including their three top pitchers.  Coach Fitzpatrick took some pressure off the players by asking them not to compare themselves to last year's squad and to go out and make their own mark.  They would end up doing that, but it wasn't without some tough regular season losses during the way.  In fact, they lost their second game of the year to Byram Hills.  After winning the next six games, the Panthers then actually lost consecutive games to Eastchester and Rye in late April.  Another loss to Pelham in early May put their record at 8-4, but they wouldn't lose again.  They entered sectional play with 13 regular season victories and would defeat Dover and Valhalla before beating Rye Neck for another Section 1 title in Class C.  Two of the greatest regional games in school history would follow. They earned a walk-off 6-5 victory over old nemesis Marlboro thanks to a lead-off solo home run by Jeff Caldara in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Two days later, the team miraculously avoided elimination in the regional final game vs. Valley Stream North as they turned a 5-3-2-6 triple play with the score tied in the bottom of the 7th inning.  They would end up winning in extra innings and advance to Little Falls, NY for the state final four for the second year in a row.  A 6-2 victory over Watervliet in the semi-finals and a 10-5 win over Greene later that day in Little Falls Stadium sealed the deal on the second of the four consecutive state championships.
